KHAIRUL ISLAM: «TAJIKISTAN IS MY SECOND MOTHERLAND»

              Dushanbe, May 23. (NIAT «Khovar», Kristina Ehrlich). – Presently, in Dushanbe a special attention is focused on the development of public housing, infrastructure, water supply and sewerage, but above all – providing the citizens of the capital with clean drinking water. In this regard, many projects are being implemented successfully. Great role in designing and implementation of these projects are assigned to the Company “BETS Consulting Services Ltd.” (Bangladesh), particularly, to the Architect and Manager of this company – Mr. Khairul Islam who gave his consent to answer to the questions of NIAT «Khovar» correspondent.
              - How did you get to Tajikistan, what was the purpose of your coming here?
              - In 1988 I arrived in Tajikistan to study. I got admission and successfully graduated with Master's Degree from Tajik Technical University, faculty of Architecture and Construction. After graduation, I returned back to Bangladesh and began working as the Architect in construction company. But in 2000, I again came back to Tajikistan with the intention of continuing study in Postgraduate Course. Due to some reasons, my studies did not have continuation. But I stayed to live and work in Tajikistan. Since 2000 I have been working with the company «BETS Consulting Services Ltd.».
              - What do you follow in your professional activity?
              - The knowledge and obtained experience are the criteria of my activity. For instance, in Bangladesh, the Complex “JamoatKhona” for Aga Khan Foundation was constructed according to my designs, as well as Industrial and Sports complexes, private houses and a factory for production of safety glass. And in Tajikistan, kindergartens and schools were constructed under my management. Other structures are being designed.
              - Do you use the experience of coryphaei’s of world architecture, if yes, which of them?
              - The architecture is the national patrimony and subject of admiration of Italy. The architects of Italy are national heroes. They are coryphaei’s of architecture and they have experience to be learned today and tomorrow. Such names as Norman Foster, Rafiul Alam Pintoo, Shukesh Kanti Das, Mirsharif Shahobov are professionals of high class, their works win admiration. For instance, Architect from Switzerland, Mari Botta impressed me with a unique bricklaying. Now, we use her method during constriction of housing estates in Tajikistan. 
             - How do you assess the construction in Tajikistan and Architectural aspect of Dushanbe?
             - In my opinion, Dushanbe is the scaled and correctly designed city. There were times when the capital of Tajikistan had been constructed chaotically with infringement of harmony laws that led to inexpressiveness of development of some micro-districts and streets. But, when the authority undertook intensive urban development and creation of modern infrastructure, the city has become functional complex of industrial, social and cultural life. Tajikistan for me is a beautiful country with ancient culture and traditions. 
             - Which considerations do you follow while selecting projects under construction and what difficulties arise during this selection? 
              - The principal task of each Architect is to observe and implement the conditions of a client. The essential point of relations between architect and client is mutual tolerance, ability to build diplomatic relations, to achieve own aims but without infringing upon interests of other party. Structurally, the clear mutual relations are built when each of parties clearly understand and agrees with interests and tasks of other party. Therefore, sometimes, it is necessary to assert one’s rights as author but it doesn’t occur always. Fortunately, I didn’t face such problems.
            - Spontaneous construction in the capital. What is needed to prevent it? 
            - My stance is negative. The relevant authority should control this aspect and there should be applied more strict law. 
            - Your attitude towards architecture of small forms (booths, shops, and advertising panels)? 
            - It is necessary to establish uniform architectural form for small facilities, which would be distinguished against general aspect of construction. It needs significant financing. The architecture of small forms in Tajikistan doesn’t have its development. My attitude towards advertising panels of any character is negative. In my opinion, they obstruct the work of Architect. 
             - Please, tell a few words about the company where you are working now? 
             - The company «BETS Consulting Services Ltd.» has been working in Tajikistan for 10 years. Within this period, many projects in different sectors have been implemented and we have many projects to be implemented in near future. In the company, I work as Architect and Manager. The most important thing I would like to say at the end of our conversation is that I am very much happy to work in Tajikistan, such beautiful and fabulously rich in all respects. Today, it is my second motherland.
