EU Statement related with punishment for slander in Tajikistan
Dushanbe, July 10. (NIAT “Khovar”).-
The Representation of the European Union in the Republic of Tajikistan welcomes the amendments to the Criminal Code of the Republic of Tajikistan, abolishing two articles of the Code, which provides criminal punishment for libel and insult.
At the EU Representation has been noted, that 137 Criminal Code of RT, still provides for criminal liability in certain cases, and challenges the Government of Tajikistan to abolish the remaining provisions, so as to abolish criminal punishment for slander.
EU will continue to interact in promotion of media freedom and freedom of expression in Tajikistan, the EU Representation in Tajikistan reported. (Translated by M.Ismatova)
